Matthew Hoy

PERFORMER / PROGRAMMER / COLLABORATOR

HUSH KIT is the soundhouse of Matthew Hoy – a Melbourne-based

cellist, creative producer and collaborator distinguished by acclaimed work that transforms the listener experience.

Matthew conceives, develops and realises innovative music-based experiences instilled with a fundamental purpose to connect

people, space and place in a contemporary way that

respects Australia’s diversity and shared past.

Finding resonance between art-music paradigms and realms beyond, Matthew’s collaborative instincts are evident across a diverse array of projects that have resulted in Helpmann nominated and ARIA awarded endeavours involving artists including American new music super-group Eighth Blackbird, Australian music icon Paul Kelly, Paul Grabowsky, and the U.K's Brodsky Quartet alongside Eddie Perfect. Other projects include commissions featuring the late Uncle Archie Roach, cabaret

sensation Meow Meow, APY Lands electro-pop duo Electric Fields,

soul-funk sensations The Bamboos, & south Indian platform Sangam.

Most recently Matthew has also served as Four Winds Artistic Director, 2023 Festival Creative Director and Head of Programming for

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

As a performer, Matthew holds performance bachelor’s and master’s degrees from both Sydney Conservatorium, Manhattan School of

Music, and is privileged such training and aligned with his values

afford the opportunity to make music in solo and collaborative

settings with people from all corners of the globe and walks of life.

Be it collaborating with elders on the Spinifex Lands, mentoring Sistema youth in Venezuela, working with Big hART on Tasmania’s north-west coast community, sharing the stage with Bryce Dessner (The National), appearing at Radialsystem Berlin and London’s National Theatre in Europe, at BAM, Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center in the US,

or touring nationally with Birds of Tokyo, these are all formative experiences Matthew has had alongside many others on the

concert platform as a member of the Australian World Orchestra

and West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

Beyond his own performative practice, Matthew also curates music-based projects in partnership with festivals, presenters, communities, orchestras, venues, commercial companies and fellow creatives – including Arts Centre Melbourne, MONA, NGV International & Potter, Bluebottle, Melbourne Recital Centre, Nike, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Matilda Bay Brewing, ACCA, BIGhART, Arts Access, City of Port Phillip, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Sofitel on Collins.

Motivation to find renewed relevance in age-old forms led

Matthew to partner with Australian designer Ben Cobham in the

creation of Quartetthaus – a custom-built, portable performance

space, envisioned and engineered in celebration of the string

quartet, which dissolves the performer-audience divide.

Matthew has held positions including Music Associate with Melbourne International Arts Festival and Program Manager at The Australian

National Academy of Music (ANAM), advising on programming

concepts and content, as well as presentation delivery spanning

a broad range of globally acclaimed artists including

Ryuichi Sakamoto, Los Angeles Master Chorale,

Tan Dun, Nils Frahm, and Silkroad Ensemble.

Matthew is also the founding Artistic Director of soft soft loud at Fremantle Arts Centre – a critically acclaimed series he led from the

cello dedicated exclusively to premieres featuring international

and Australian musicians and composers that enjoyed an 8-year partnership with Perth International Arts Festival.
